What Does Teeth Whitening Entail?
An initial consultation is always the first step with teeth whitening. We’ll discuss with you which whitening option is the best one for you. Please be aware that whitening only works on natural teeth, any fillings, crowns or bridges you may have won’t change colour.
What Options Are Available To You
Zoom! in-surgery teeth whitening is a procedure designed to lighten the colour of your teeth using a combination of a hydrogen peroxide gel and a specially designed ultraviolet lamp. The Zoom! treatment involves using the gel and lamp in conjunction with each other to produce maximum whitening results in the shortest possible time. During the procedure, the whitening gel will be applied to your teeth and your teeth will then be exposed to the light from the Zoom! lamp for 4 x 15 minute sessions. During the entire treatment, a plastic retractor will be placed in your mouth to help keep it open and the soft tissues of your mouth (i.e., the lips, gums, cheeks and tongue) will be covered to ensure they are not exposed to either the gel or the light. Lip balm (SPF rating: 30+) may also be applied as needed and you will be provided with an ultraviolet light filter for your eyes. After the treatment is completed, the retractor and all the gel and tissue coverings will be removed from your mouth.
Before and after the treatment, the shade of your upper front teeth will be assessed and recorded.
Take home kits
The dentist will make a customised, bespoke whitening tray for you by taking an impression of your teeth. Once the trays are made you will be given professional advice on how best to whiten your teeth at home to ensure you get the best results. This is a slower process than the in-surgery teatment and may take you up to two weeks to reach your desired shade.
The great thing about home whitening trays is that they can be reused in the future when you feel like your teeth are starting to discolour again.
This is a specialist whitening procedure that is only offered in surgery by your dentist. It is used for a single tooth that may have discoloured after root canal treatment. Using the same hole created to be able to root canal treat the tooth (therefore no extra tooth is removed) the whitening agent is placed into the tooth and sealed in place with a temporary filling. This process may need to be repeated several times until the tooth is at a matching shade to the surrounding teeth. Once satisfied with the shade, the tooth is filled back up with a filling to match the new colour of the tooth.
